G8 Family Day out at Auchterader

Children from all over Scotland will be converging on
Auchterader on Sunday to hear about the lives of children in developing countries and paint buddies to decorate the steel fence designed to insulate the leaders of the world richest countries from the protests going on outside. Armed with poster paints and sticky stuff they will hear about the lives of children like 6 year old Kato, a Ugandan orphan who is looked after by his 12 year old sister and dreams of becoming a car mechanic like his late father, and Margret, also from Uganda, who is looking forward to the day when there is enough money for her to afford to go to school. The activity, which is jointly organised by G8 Alternatives and the Scottish Socialist Party, is designed to highlight the plight of children caught in the crossfire of the G8 policies. By getting children to make buddies and attach them to the fence, not only will it mute the unsightlyness of the fence, but also build links with the
local community and give children an insight into how children in other parts of the world live.
Mhairi McAlpine (SSP) said " This activity is designed to give children an insight into how G8 policies affect children in other countries and why it is so important that we make our voices heard. We aim to have a fun day out in Auchterader with lots of paint and mess." Gill Hubbard (G8 Alternatives) said "This activity will allow families
who are not able to make the protests at Gleneagles on the
6th June to make their voices heard. The buddies will serve as a reminder of the children that the G8 so often forgets"
