Electron Club Open Day

Electron Club Open Day
2pm-8pm Saturday 13th June 2009
Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, G2 3JD

all events are FREE

For more info see: http://www.electronclub.org
Contact: openday@electronclub.org

The Electron Club is a voluntary run space where people interested in
things like free open source software, circuit bending, hardware
hacking, computer recycling, streaming, audio and video editing, green
technologies, and amateur radio can meet, use equipment, and share and
disseminate their skills and ideas. The space supports both individuals
developing their own projects and a number of group projects, all of
which are not-for-profit initiatives with a community, educational or
environmental aspect to them.

Now in our third year, the Electron Club Open Days are an opportunity to
see and try out a range of things that people do, as well as having the
opportunity to meet others with similar interests, make, chat, discuss
and enjoy.

TESLA SOUL - Electron Club Makers Fair and homebaking
2pm-5pm

Stalls and demos by electronic makers, designers and artists. An
opportunity to see and play with some of the projects created by
Electron Club members and related groups - a theremin menagerie and mini
synthesizer kits from Clockworkrobot, 3D paper engineering, circuit
bending, micro FM radio, DIY wind power technology, creative computer
trash recycling, 101 things to do with a dead keyboard, video-into-audio
transformations by Ben Rush, members of 'Inspector Tapehead'
demonstrating their "Tapehead Inspector", a custom built instrument for
making music from old magnetic tape, and much more. Plus some of the
excellent home-baking that has been hallmark of all our Open Days. Come
and do a bit of soldering or have a cup of tea and chat with the people
who make things.

TAPE-WIRE-HEAD-SCREEN - music, film and sound arts
starts 2pm, film at 6pm

The Electron Club includes many people working in music, film and
experimental arts. Document, the UK's leading human rights film
festival, will be showing the UK premier of "A Bar at Victoria Station",
a sharp, witty film, shot in a direct cinema style about East European
migrant workers by the Polish director Dawid Leszek. There will be a
media kiosk with films made by Electron Club members and groups such as
the Digital Desperados, a film-group for young black and Asian women.
Indoors, we'll have a live performance of Alvin Lucier's legendary
"Music on A Long Thin Wire" by members of 'Obscure Desire of the
Bourgeoisie' and 'BuffalobuffalobuffaloBuffalobuffalo'. Outdoors, artist
Lucie Potter will invite people on a specially planned sound walk with
micro radio broadcasts around the Garnethill area.

THE LIFE OF SOCIAL THINGS - socially-engaged technology forum
2pm-5pm

A series of discussions about different ways in which society and
technology come together.

2pm - Glasgow FabLabs

FabLabs are small scale fabrication and construction workshops that
provide computerised production technologies on an artisanal scale
making them available to communities and independent makers and
designers. From inner-city Boston to remote Indian villages, FabLabs
have become a worldwide network of community technology centres. Glasgow
FabLabs is a project aiming to bring such a centre to Glasgow. This
forum will present the ideas behind the Glasgow FabLabs project and
explore the benefits of community-access technology.

3pm - Community Media and Citizens Journalism

The internet has offered a platform for communities and groups outside
of the mainstream media to have a voice and share knowledge. Whilst
there are many notable examples of such activity, the tools to create
such a democratized media space are still often out of people's reach.
This forum will look at some practical examples of community media
coming from Glasgow, present some current projects looking to make
ordinary people's voices more prominent and explore the relationships
between the grass-roots and mainstream media.

4pm - Technology, Social Justice and the Environment

How can we use technology for the greater common good? Whilst the
advance of technology promotes the promise of a better world, that
promise has often been compromised or undermined in how we make use of
such advances. Certain technological developments have contributed to
environmental and social problems on a scale arguably never seen before.
Technology, however, has also been used to tackle such issues as climate
change and social injustice. This forum will share and explore some
practical examples being used in Scotland today, from noise monitoring
devices to participatory video and community mapping projects.

RAFFLE - broadband fundraiser

This year we are raising funds to improve our network facilities at the
Electron Club and we will be doing a raffle with prizes including a
group voucher to go paintballing.

GOVANHILL COMMUNITY CONFERENCE, SATURDAY 18TH APRIL 2009 @ HOLYROOD SECONDARY SCHOOL, 60 DIXON ROAD, GLASGOW

Are you interested to hear ideas and engage in thought provoking talks that try
to be erudite while accessible?

The eighth in a series of West of Scotland Community conferences will take
place on Saturday 18th April 2009 at Holyrood Secondary School, 60 Dixon
Road, Crosshill, Govanhill, Glasgow.

Registration starts at 9.30am and the conference begins at 10am. Admission
is free but donations from organisations and individuals are most welcome.

Speakers will include: Dr Chik Collins on Welfare Reform; Dr Sarah Glyn on Housing; Elinor McKenzie of the Scottish Pensioners Forum, Liz McCaffcerty of the local Schools 'n' Nursery Campaign, and those working to improve understanding of and the conditions of the recent immigrants to Govanhill.DEFENDING SCHOOLS, HOUSING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE – OPPOSING DISCRIMINATION AND CUTS

In Govanhill, we are a Scotch broth mix with eastern promise – Jewish, Irish, Pakistani, Chinese, African, and Polish, Russian, Arab, Iranian. Over the years most of us have mixed in well, while retaining and developing our new local unique identities, though there have been short term problems.

The most recent addition to our community of communities are the Roma. Are you are interested in drama? Recently there has been plenty of drama in our area due to the scope for misunderstanding between cultural groups and the role of the authorities hovering over each situation usually reacting, if at all, too little too late to each crisis. And lurking behind the facade of multicultural musings is the reality of Fortress Europe and the ‘cold hand’ of neoliberal economics as written into the Treaty of Lisbon. What does all this do for the development of language and understanding in 21st century Scotland? What does all that mean? Come along and find out.

If you think you might be interested in communicating with other people who may be encouraged to think and learn from each others' words, please get back to me by email: agahst2003@hotmail.com or by phone 07826 834 116 (as we would like to have some idea of numbers for the caterers). On reply you will also be forwarded an up-to-date Conference Programme.

Please forward this email to whoever you think may be interested.

- A brand new part of the RiB is 'the *book swap* box' - bring in a book that you have finished with and exchange it for another one free of charge (old or new it doesn't matter) - a book that has affected you and you think will motivate someone else...interesting political books, stimulating social commentary, thought provoking critiques etc - in other words don't bring in any old crap - no 'celebrity' memoirs, populist fiction etc...please note the ethos of this idea is 'leave the box as you would hope to find it' - we hope you get the idea!

- As well as the usual mix of stalls we have additional tables from Unity, the Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group and the Anarchist Federation... we also have new journals from the Spokesman, new t-shirts and badges from No Sweat as well as latest issues of the Anarchist Critic, Burgh Angel, Reel News, Scottish Left Review, Resistance, Source and Mute as well as lots of other new stock.

- For this event we have chosen the RiB top twelve - a mixture of new / bargain / best sellers / recommended reads for you...

* Solidarity and Greetings - last chance to pick up some IWW
fundraising cards.

* AFAQ - its big, its bright, its brilliant - the book some of us
have been keenly awaiting is finally here.

* A Century of Spin - David Millar and William Dinan uncover the
machinations of PR industry... www.spinwatch.org

* We the Anarchists! - a study of the Iberian Anarchist Federation
(FAI) - a new AK Press edition of Stuart Christie's book.

* The Atheist - a cracking short story of rebellious youth by Alan
McMunnigall.

* On Fire - the battle of Genoa and the anti-capitalist movement -
still one of the bargain buys of the bookfair.

* Radical Glasgow - a must have (or must read anyway!) - John
Couzin's skeletal sketch of Glasgow's radical tradition - still a
popular and important book.

* Variant - issues 32 and 33 - if you have not yet read the article
that prompted the banning of the magazine by Culture & Sport
Glasgow... then you can still pick up copies.

* Not Cancelled - a new sticker from angry artworks (an accompanying
T-shirt will be available soon!).

* Zionism - the real enemy of the Jews - one of the only places in
Glasgow to get volume 1 of Alan Hart's detailed indictment.

* Victim of Geography - go to the launch and/or watch it in the
videotheque and/or buy the film to take away.

* Coffee - the book-fair would not be complete without one of our
favourite stimulants! - Feral trade beans or Zapatista espresso -
you choose. (And there may be some vegan coffee cake too!!!!)

Gentrification/Commonwealth Games Monitoring - Thursday the 27th of november at the electron club (upstairs in the CCA on sauchiehall street

Meeting Website to monitor gentrification strategies in the lead up to the commonwealth games 2014 in the east end of glasgow
hello all,

following on from discussions at the 'resisting regenicide: struggles in the city' event at the CCA on saturday the 1st of november, a few of us see the need for a website to monitor gentrification strategies in the lead up to the commonwealth games 2014 in the east end of glasgow. a model for this type of activity can be found in the london games monitor website: http://www.gamesmonitor.org.uk/. at the moment we're going with something 'Glasgow2014GamesMonitor' as a url, but this will be up for further discussion.we will be holding an initial open meeting to discuss how we can take these plans forward on:

thursday the 27th of november at the electron club (upstairs in the CCA on sauchiehall street). the meeting will start at 6.00 and finish at 8.00 (we can continue the discussion later if anyone wants to)

anyone interested in contributing to the website (with either content or technical skills) is very welcome, as is anyone who is interested more broadly in what will undoubtedly be an enormous transformation of the landscape in the east end of glasgow. we want to see that this transformation is for the benefit of the local population - not just the business elites.

we hope that the website, beyond providing a centralised source of useful information, can become a focus for further community engagement in the east end, particularly as it relates to the potential 'regeneration' (gentrification as we see it) of the clyde gateway area and the commonwealth games.
