9/11 and War without End –Is Iran Next?

An evening of talks, film and discussion with David Shayler( ex- MI5, whistleblower ) and
Annie Machon ( Author of “Spies, Lies and Whistleblowers”)
Renfield St. Stephen’s Church, Bath street, ( near King’s Theatre), Glasgow,Thursday, 24th November at 7.30

“This is total war. We are fighting a variety of enemies. There are lots of them out there. All this talk about we are going to do Afghanistan, then we will do Iraq….this is entirely the wrong way to go about it. If we just let our vision of the world go forth, and we embrace it entirely and we don’t try to piece together clever diplomacy, but just wage a total war. …our children will sing great songs about us years from now.”

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

As Hallow'een approaches, get into the spirit of things and dress up for this week's Critical Mass bike ride. For women and their kids, there's the chance to talk about wise women and witches at the radical women's health group (see Health section) - and dooking for apples too! The George's X Chalkboard social centre is now open Friday-Tuesday, 2pm-7pm.
We would love to open seven days for longer hours, so if you can give time
to do a shift, come to one of our organising meetings or drop in and get
involved. Alternatively, you can support us by setting up a standing order
donation (see bottom of this email). We have funds to keep the centre open
for a while, but ultimately we'll depend on support and fundraising.

Have a good week!

Support the Vucaj Family 11am, Thursday 27 October - outside the Scottish Parliament

Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees has called a demonstration outside the Parliament. They are inviting people to attend with campaign and other banners. The Vucaj family - refugees living in Glasgow - were brutally deported to Kosova on 29 September. They are now living in dreadful and dangerous conditions in Northern Albania. Please come to the Parliament on Thursday 27 October @ 11.00 a.m. in support of the Vucaj family
Note correction to earlier email - this demo has been called by Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees, not PAIH
At 2pm, in committee Room 3 of Scottish parliament: Peter Mullan & Robina Qureshi will show MSPs and interested individuals the film footage of their fact finding visit to the vucaj family in Northern Albania. It makes for difficult watching and is the first footage of what happens beyond deportation. We hope the film will help establish the compassionate humanitarian grounds for the family’s return to Glasgow.

To confirm your attendance please email home@paih.org with the name(s) of the person wishing to attend.

More about the Vucaj family at www.paih.org.uk

Stop the Terrorism Bill - sign SACC's online petition at http://new.PetitionOnline.com/SACC03/petition.html
Signatories include Aamer Anwar (lawyer), A L Kennedy (author), Osama Saeed (MAB), Dennis Canavan MSP (Ind), Anas Altikriti (MAB), Carolyn Leckie MSP (SSP), Stewart Stevenson MSP (SNP)

Organising meeting for Fallujah eyewitness talk - Thursday 20th October

6pm. George's X Chalkboard.

George's X Challboard is at 34 Clarendon Place. G20 7PZ. From George's X
underground, cross Maryhill Rd and its directly behind "and so to bed" and "the
cooker factory".

A couple of Glasgow activists have been organising a talk for US author and
activist Rahul Mahajan who was in Fallujah during the April 2004 siege of the
city. He is doing a UK speaking tour to coincide with the one year anniversary
of the November 2004 attack on Fallujah. There's more details on the voices in
the wildeness website:
http://www.voices.netuxo.co.uk/remember%20fallujah.htm

We really need help if we're going to get outwith the circle of those that
already know the truth of what is going on in Iraq.

We've had a few ideas, including getting a celebrity to introduce Rahul -
someone more likely to appeal to "non political" people. Anyone got any contacts?

All ideas welcome. Nothing is fixed for Rahul's visit to Glasgow except the
date - Wednesday 23rd November.

VUCAJ CHILDREN - THEY BELONG TO GLASGOW CAMPAIGN LAUNCH - ACTOR, DIRECTOR PETER MULLAN TO LEAD THE CAUSE

Public Meeting details: 6.45 pm, Thursday 20 October 2005, STUC Headquarters, 333 Woodlands Road, Glasgow G3. Speakers include: Peter Mullan, Robina Qureshi, Politicians, friends and neighbours and school friends of the Vucaj family. To confirm your attendance, email home@paih.org.Peter Mullan, Glasgow’s award winning actor and director, will lead the launch of a new campaign designed to return the recently deported Vucaj family back to Glasgow and Scotland.
Called “They belong to Glasgow” Campaign, Mullan will introduce a film and speak about his recent trip to Albania to meet the Vucaj family at a public meeting to be held at 6.45 pm on Thursday 20th October 2005 in the Scottish Trade Union Centre, Woodlands Road, Charing Cross, Glasgow G3.
Footage of the trip and an interview with 13 year old Saida Vucaj will be shown and Peter will be joined by politicians from across the political spectrum and young friends of Saida, Elvis and Nimet from Drumchapel, Glasgow.

The campaign objective is the safe return of the Vucaj family by any legal means possible.

Robina Qureshi, Director of Positive Action in Housing, who led the recent Albanian trip jointly with Peter Mullan on 9-12 October, said today:

“These children have lived in Glasgow for five years. Saida was only seven when she arrived. She is now 13 and her and her two brothers, Elvis (18) and Nimet (16) consider themselves Glaswegian and Scottish. We are determined to organise their safe return to our city where they were welcomed and educated. I plead to First Minister Jack McConnell and Scotland’s Parliament to help them to return. This is their home, not Albania. Saida, in particular, is in danger. Child trafficking for prostitution is rife in Northern Albania where they have been returned to. We need them back now before it’s too late.”

Peter Mullan added:

“Saida, Nimet and Elvis Vucaj belong to Glasgow. They think like Glaswegians, they talk like Glaswegians. They have been forcibly kidnapped from us and transplanted into a country that can best be described as pre-industrial. Their new home is an empty hovel on a Northern Albanian mountain that was ransacked in their absence and is the direct line of a major sex trafficking route leaving them unspeakably vulnerable. These young Glaswegian kids have been taken from us and abandoned to a life of unimaginable despair. One of the few men who remain of the village stepped forwards to the kids when we were with them and asked what they were doing there. The kids said they didn’t know - they were Scottish. He opened up a weird toothless smile and said “You must go. Stay here and you die”. All we ask is that these children are brought back to the only home that they know, Glasgow!”

Meeting details: 6.45 pm, Thursday 20 October 2005, STUC Headquarters, 333 Woodlands Road, Glasgow G3.

Wildlife walk in Kelvingrove Park, the bandstand and other issues

Hi,
Enclosed below is a mailout from the Friends of Kelvingrove Park to let our members and friends know that the Kelvingrove Autumn Wildlife Walk is taking place on Saturday 15th October 2005. It is led by Fiona Stewart of the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and starts at the Stewart Memorial Fountain at 10am.

There is also news of the next stage of the Bandstand Project, and our AGM which is taking place on Thursday 3rd November. Our speaker will be writer and broadcaster Alastair McIntosh, on 'The Value of Urban Parks'.N.B. The image attached to this e-mail is a first rough-draft of our new map. The main purpose is to show the architectural features within the park for our guided walks, but also shown on this version are some of the
past schemes to remove parkland for car-parks, bistros and other private developments. This is an issue that will be discussed at our November meeting.

best wishes,
friends@kelvingrovepark.com

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Autumn Walk - Saturday 15th October 2005

Dear Member/Supporter

As tree canopies are already beginning to reflect different colours of sunlight, and west winds blow freshness across the green spaces, I am writing to invite you to join us on our Autumn Walk. This will be led by Fiona Stewart who works for Scottish Wildlife Trust, and was Urban Wildlife Officer for Glasgow. Meet at the Stewart Fountain around 10am. We usually wait for about 10 mins for people, the walk will last till about 12pm and please feel free to join or leave the walk - the squirrels won’t mind.

The Bandstand Project has taken another step - the Parks Officers have accepted our Business Plan, agreed to send an 'in principle' letter telling Historic Scotland they will maintain the building once restored, and agreed to set up a working group to take the project forward.

You may have seen articles in the press about private developments in Glasgow’s Public Parks. Kelvingrove is surrounded by one of the most densely populated areas in Scotland, and is below the recommended minimum of open space per head of population. Much new building has already taken place and more is planned (in many cases further removing greenspace areas like at Belmont Street and Albert Terrace) and this
will increase the pressure on the park. It is for this and many other reasons that the Friends has consistently and successfully opposed private developments in Kelvingrove. This controversial topic will be one of the themes of our Annual General Meeting on Thursday 3rd November at The Annexe, Stewartville Street.

At that meeting our speaker will be writer and broadcaster Alastair McIntosh (involved in many successful groups such as the Isle of Eigg Trust) speaking on 'The Value of Urban Parks'. Venue: Partick Community Asoc, Thursday 3rd November.
FULL DIRECTIONS AND FURTHER DETAILS WILL BE SENT OUT BEFORE THE MEETING.

If you want information about the above or other aspects of the park (the moorhens have recently hatched three chicks from a nest on some rocks on the duckpond), feel fre to phone on 0141 339 7749, or e-mail
ed@brocweb.com

Best wishes
Ed Gillett (Secretary)

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

As another week goes by, it's great to see more people using the social centre. As well as our drop-in, we now host meetings of a local tenant's association, the IWW (radical union) and a women's health group. Plans are afoot for a Food Not Bombs cafe and a community newsletter. The George's X Chalkboard social centre is now open Friday-Tuesday, 2pm-7pm. We would love to open seven days for longer hours, so if you can give time to do a shift, come to one of our organising meetings or drop in and get involved. Alternatively, you can support us by setting up a standing order donation (see bottom of this email). We have funds to keep the centre open for a while, but ultimately we'll depend on support and fundraising.

Have a good week!

For the return of the Vucaj family to Glasgow

PLEASE SUPPORT POSITIVE ACTION IN HOUSING’S CALL TODAY – THURSDAY 6 OCTOBER - FOR THE RETURN OF THE VUCAJ FAMILY TO GLASGOW AND WRITE TO THE FIRST MINISTER URGENT

We intend to meet with the first minister tomorrow – see below - and let him speak to Saida who is desperate to speak to him to ask him to let them back so that she and her brothers and mother can pursue their education at Drumchapel high secondary school and Anniesland college.

Saida is now three weeks and one day away from her school. She says she feels ‘kidnapped’ and just wants to come home. If you feel strongly about the Vucaj family and others like them please take this action now to help return the vucaj family to Scotland . We are constantly told that asylum is reserved, but all we are asking is that first minister recognises the wrongs done to the vucaj family and the need for the children to return to their education - as he was once a teacher himself - and use his power of influence to make representations to home secretary Charles Clarke to grant entry to the vucaj family on compassionate grounds, which Charles Clarke has the power to do. Some people ask why we don’t go direct to Charles Clarke, home secretary. We say fine, but let jack McConnell as first minister also speak up for scotland and go direct to Charles Clarke and ask him to return the vucaj family to scotland on compassionate grounds - which the home secretary has the power to do - ad in the spirit of the fresh talent initiative – which the first minister has been promoting all along.

Please read the various statements below and then email your personal message right now to the first minister at firstminister@scotland.gsi.gov.uk and copy your message to robina@paih.org .

First Aid Training for Activists - Friday 11th - Sunday 13th November

Would you know how to help someone if…

They collapsed at a demo?

They were hit by a police baton?

They were suffering from the cold on a protest site?

….would you like to know?

This training is being organised by the UK Action Medics, who provided first aid care throughout this year’s G8 protests. We are a voluntary group who work without a leadership structure.

www.actionmedics.org.uk

The skills you learn on this training will be focused on situations at protests and direct actions, but you’ll find them useful in the rest of your life too!

Course needs minimum 10 people to run. To register interest, email glasgowtraining@actionmedics.org.uk

PLEASE LET US KNOW ABOUT EVENTS HAPPENING IN AND AROUND GLASGOW SO THAT WE CAN INCLUDE THEM NEXT WEEK.

Preferred format is a short summary, with practical details of when and where, and a link to a web page for more detail. If you do not have a web site of your own, the excellent http://scotland.indymedia.org/ allows anyone to easily create a page letting others know what you have been, or are up to.

Send that to glasgowautonomyupdates@lists.riseup.net before Monday for inclusion in the following week.
