Wildlife walk in Kelvingrove Park, the bandstand and other issues

Hi,
Enclosed below is a mailout from the Friends of Kelvingrove Park to let our members and friends know that the Kelvingrove Autumn Wildlife Walk is taking place on Saturday 15th October 2005. It is led by Fiona Stewart of the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and starts at the Stewart Memorial Fountain at 10am.

There is also news of the next stage of the Bandstand Project, and our AGM which is taking place on Thursday 3rd November. Our speaker will be writer and broadcaster Alastair McIntosh, on 'The Value of Urban Parks'.N.B. The image attached to this e-mail is a first rough-draft of our new map. The main purpose is to show the architectural features within the park for our guided walks, but also shown on this version are some of the
past schemes to remove parkland for car-parks, bistros and other private developments. This is an issue that will be discussed at our November meeting.

best wishes,

Autumn Walk - Saturday 15th October 2005

Dear Member/Supporter

As tree canopies are already beginning to reflect different colours of sunlight, and west winds blow freshness across the green spaces, I am writing to invite you to join us on our Autumn Walk. This will be led by Fiona Stewart who works for Scottish Wildlife Trust, and was Urban Wildlife Officer for Glasgow. Meet at the Stewart Fountain around 10am. We usually wait for about 10 mins for people, the walk will last till about 12pm and please feel free to join or leave the walk - the squirrels won’t mind.

The Bandstand Project has taken another step - the Parks Officers have accepted our Business Plan, agreed to send an 'in principle' letter telling Historic Scotland they will maintain the building once restored, and agreed to set up a working group to take the project forward.

You may have seen articles in the press about private developments in Glasgow’s Public Parks. Kelvingrove is surrounded by one of the most densely populated areas in Scotland, and is below the recommended minimum of open space per head of population. Much new building has already taken place and more is planned (in many cases further removing greenspace areas like at Belmont Street and Albert Terrace) and this
will increase the pressure on the park. It is for this and many other reasons that the Friends has consistently and successfully opposed private developments in Kelvingrove. This controversial topic will be one of the themes of our Annual General Meeting on Thursday 3rd November at The Annexe, Stewartville Street.

At that meeting our speaker will be writer and broadcaster Alastair McIntosh (involved in many successful groups such as the Isle of Eigg Trust) speaking on 'The Value of Urban Parks'. Venue: Partick Community Asoc, Thursday 3rd November.
FULL DIRECTIONS AND FURTHER DETAILS WILL BE SENT OUT BEFORE THE MEETING.

If you want information about the above or other aspects of the park (the moorhens have recently hatched three chicks from a nest on some rocks on the duckpond), feel fre to phone on 0141 339 7749, or e-mail
ed@brocweb.com

Best wishes
