A self-help guide for asylum seekers facing detention & removal

What can be done about the increasing numbers of women, children and men who are unjustly detained and deported despite compelling evidence of rape and other torture, persecution and trauma?
This lifesaving and labour saving Guide is based on intensive work over many years with women (and some men) asylum seekers by Legal Action for Women, Black Women's Rape Action Project and Women Against Rape, all based at the Crossroads Women's Centre.

Ian Macdonald QC: "Legal Action for Women, a free legal service whose determination to win justice puts many lawyers to shame, has put together their experience of day-to-day legal case work and campaigning in this exciting Guide. Not only is it invaluable for those fighting in their own defence or that of their family and neighbours; it is also essential reading for lawyers, advocates and other professionals who will benefit greatly from its practical information and advice.

At a time when principles of international protection for those fleeing persecution are being undermined in Europe and elsewhere, and asylum seekers battle even to get their case heard in court, this Guide is needed more than ever."

Ms X, All African Women’s Group: :My brother phoned Black Women’s Rape Action Project two days before I was due to be deported because no-one else would help me, not even the organisation where I was getting counselling. They sent many urgent letters and made many phone calls and found me a new solicitor who submitted a fresh claim. I was alone in Yarl's Wood, and felt very isolated and depressed but they called me regularly. When my deportation was stopped, they also worked with my solicitor and after twenty-six days of misery I finally got out."

Niki Adams, spokeswoman for LAW: "As a result of our actions and advice, women and children have been released from detention, deportations prevented and cases reopened. Many women whose cases had not been thoroughly examined and who would have faced grave danger and even death had they been returned to their countries of origin, have gone on to win the right to stay."

This accessible step-by-step guide puts together information that is not usually available so that anyone determined to get protection and justice can find out how to do it.

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

The G8 summit is coming up fast, and you might still be wondering what your role in the protests should be. Well, this weekend brings 3 trainings - for first aiders, blockaders and clowns - that might give you a better idea.

UK Action Medics are holding a 2 and a half day training for those who want to provide first aid at the G8. The course will cover how to deal with heatstoke/sunburn/exposure, the usual first aid scenarios such as sprains and cuts, and will also have a section on treating injuries from tear gas (here's hoping that won't be a problem though!)

The Faslane G8 team are starting their direct action preparations with a half day training in Glasgow. It will be a safe space to discuss hopes and fears for the G8 actions, and learn how to stay non-violent in difficult situations.

And finally, the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination are back to teach creative ways to resist the G8. Whether you fancy praying to products or clowning around Gleneagles, this training will stop us all getting too serious!

Contact details for all three trainings can be found in this week's update.

Have a good week!

things from escalating?

GLASGOW SAVE OUR HOMES CAMPAIGN

G8 2005 Housing Action ALERT

GLASGOW SAVE OUR HOMES + DUNDEE DEFEND COUNCIL HOUSING +

+ Edinburgh Against Stock Transfer EAST +

SAVE OUR HOMES FROM ANTI-DEMOCRATIC GLOBAL FINACE

There is to be a direct action this Tuesday 21 June 2005 in

Glasgow to highlight the issue of stock transfer / the privatisation of Council Housing.

Activists from across Scotland will come together in Glasgow – BE THERE Central Hotel, (at the corner entrance beside the fire fighter statue) Gordon St,

Tuesday 10.30am to carry out an occupation of a relevant

building. Details will be released on the day, please be there.

ACTIVE DEMOCRACY – MAKE YOU VOICE HEARD – DEMAND THE RIGHT TO PUBLICLY FUNDED, PUBLICLY ACCOUNTACBLE DECENT HOUSING

This direct action is being taken by Tenants from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee and elsewhere to oppose the Proposed Destruction of the 24 Hour Concierge Service in the High Rise Flats in Glasgow. This represents the ongoing downgrading of Services to Tenants in the Multi Storey Flats which the Glasgow Housing Association Ltd. Is orchestrating so that tenants may feel unsafe and forced to leave their homes. The landlord, GHA Ltd., want creating a pretext for their Mass Demolition Programme and clear the Tenants to ‘free up’ the land for Private developers and to satisfy their Future Paymasters a Private Banking Consortium who only want to profit from the misery of the Glasgow’s tenants.

Communities Scotland are encouraging this ideological drive to Destroy Social Housing and Socially Mixed Communities. This is Class War by Scotland’s Elite against Working Class People. This must stop now!

WE SAY

NO TO THE REMOVAL OF THE 24 HOUR CONCIERGE SERVICE

NO TO THE MASS DEMOLITION PROGRAMME

WE DEMAND THAT MASSIVE CASH SURPLUS HORDED BY GHA Ltd. AND PAID FOR BY TAX PAYERS MUST BE INVESTED IN THE MULTI STOREY FLATS SO THAT TENANTS CAN LIVE IN HOMES THAT ARE WARM, DRY, SAFE AND SECURE.

WE ARE OPPOSED TO THE PLANS FOR ANY FUTURE PRIVATISATION OF COUNCIL HOUSING IN
EDINBURGH OR ANY PART OF SCOTLAND WHICH IS BEING DRIVEN BY COMMUNITIES
SCOTLAND. THEY ARE TRYING TO PUSH PRIVATISATION OF THE COMMUNITIES HOUSING IN
EDINBURGH,

THE WESTERN ISLES,INVERCLYDE AND REFREWSHIRE.

COUNCIL HOUSING SHOULD BE PROPERLY FUNDED. IN SCOTLAND, LAST YEAR ONLY 58 COUNCIL HOUSES WERE BUILT. ON PAPER SCOTLAND HAS A GREAT CHARTER FOR RIGHTS FOR THE HOMLESS BUT IN PRACTICE THE GOVERNMENT IS MAKING THE PROBLEM WORSE.

HOMELESSNESS IN SCOTLAND IS AT RECORD LEVELS

THE PRIVATISATION OF ALL PUBLIC SERVICES IS BEING DRIVEN BY THE RICH G8 COUNTRIES’ ELITES THROUGH THE GENARAL AGREEMENT ON TRADE AND TARIFFS (GAT) – THIS MUST END!

SOCIAL NEED MUST COME BEFORE PROFIT.
COE AND JOIN US – BRING A DRUM, A WHISTLE, SOME FOOD AND FRUIT JUICE.

G8 Family Day out at Auchterader
Sunday 19th June
12.30 onwards
Auchterader Park, Perth and Kinross.

Contact:
Mhairi McAlpine, mhairi_mcalpine@yahoo.com
Tel: 01324 885129 (eve) 0141 242 2275 (day)

Children from all over Scotland will be converging on
Auchterader on Sunday to hear about the lives of children in developing countries and paint buddies to decorate the steel fence designed to insulate the leaders of the world richest countries from the protests going on outside. Armed with poster paints and sticky stuff they will hear about the lives of children like 6 year old Kato, a Ugandan orphan who is looked after by his 12 year old sister and dreams of becoming a car mechanic like his late father, and Margret, also from Uganda, who is looking forward to the day when there is enough money for her to afford to go to school. The activity, which is jointly organised by G8 Alternatives and the Scottish Socialist Party, is designed to highlight the plight of children caught in the crossfire of the G8 policies. By getting children to make buddies and attach them to the fence, not only will it mute the unsightlyness of the fence, but also build links with the
local community and give children an insight into how children in other parts of the world live.

Mhairi McAlpine (SSP) said " This activity is designed to give children an insight into how G8 policies affect children in other countries and why it is so important that we make our voices heard. We aim to have a fun day out in Auchterader with lots of paint and mess." Gill Hubbard (G8 Alternatives) said "This activity will allow families
who are not able to make the protests at Gleneagles on the
6th June to make their voices heard. The buddies will serve as a reminder of the children that the G8 so often forgets"
[ends]

Details
12.30 onwards, Auchterader Park, Perth and Kinross.

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

Our featured item this week is the ongoing campaign against the M74 motorway extension - a 6 lane elevated motorway that will plough through the Southside of Glasgow, increasing pollution and noise at a cost of up to £1 billion.

Jam74 is the umbrella group which has been campaigning on this issue for several years. As well as launching legal challenges to the motorway they have been educating Glasgow people about the damage it will cause. Recently there have been Jam74 cycle rides "to save our city" and show a positive alternative to increased car use. http://www.jam74.org/

Tied in with the anti-M74 campaign is the Cre8 Summit project in Glasgow. This week they're busy making a community garden in one of the areas the M74 will affect - read on in the Sustainability section for more details.

>>>>>>>>> RED ROAD - SAVE OUR HOMES - CAMPAIGN <<<<<<<<<

No Information, No Consultation, No Tenant Participation, No Negotiation, Authoritarian, Aloof, Arbitrary, Arrogant, Contemptuous of its Tenants and above all Secretive and Unaccountable ......

GHA Ltd. Plans to Demolish Your Home

On the 9th of March 2005 your landlord, Glasgow Housing Association Ltd. announced its plan to demolish "one of the largest of the eight Red Road tower blocks". It is part of their, crazed Masterplan to flatten all the Red Road high flats? There have been rumours about a Secret Masterplan for years, now it's official so -We need to see it. We have a right to know!
Have the Glasgow Housing Association Ltd., got the approval of the Scottish Executive to demolish your home? Do they have your approval?
The first that many tenants knew of this was when it was on TV and in the Evening Times.
And, it was recently announced "Planners want to erect the 39-storey building on the site of the old Strathclyde Regional Council headquarters at the junction of India Street and St Vincent Street. If approved, the skyscraper would top the height of the city's Red Road flats - Europe's tallest homes at just over 328ft." The new city centre building would include luxury flats, offices, shops and a swimming pool. But would it include you?
In Edinburgh, the convener of the Edinburgh Council's planning committee, Trevor Davies, recently said the time had come to look at where it might be possible to site new tall buildings.

Tenants of Red Road Were not consulted !

• Well some of the Red Road tenants did not take kindly to being treated in such a disrespectful way. On April 5th a well attended Tenants' Meeting was held by the Red Road Save Our Homes Campaign.
• It was agreed to carry out a survey which would be independent of the biased manipulation of GHA Ltd. and the Local Hypocrisy We were not consulted by GHA Ltd so we are going consulting each other.

"We have been lied to and ignored; we have to do something about it."

Would it be better to break up the GHA by moving to Second Stage transfer with private sector finance? Well, David Orr as head of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations thinks GHA has been a disaster but wants to do away with rent guarantees for tenants and move to higher rents as more housing associations come into existence. That's fine for him on £65,000 per year to advocate lofty rents.
"I want to move but will it be to something decent?" "I've lived here too long to move now." "These are sound buildings, it doesn't make sense."

Support our campaign for freedom of information for tenants in the Red Road.

Voices Across Barriers - Close Dungavel Removal Centre

Mass Protest Tuesday 5th July 2005 11.00am to 4.00pm Dungavel Removal Centre Strathaven South Lanarkshire ML10 6R Called by Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees

As the leaders of the worlds most powerful states meet in luxury at Gleneagles hotel for the G8 meeting, hundreds of people - including familieswith children -are imprisoned behind the razor wire of Scotland's shame Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre.
People imprisoned there feel so desperate that many have tried to commit suicide. They have committed no crime yet are treated like criminals. Across Europe many thousands more are locked up like animals. Their only 'crime' has been to flee war, rape, famine and persecution, seeking safety and freedom.

It is the policies of the G8 nations that create these horrific wars and famines that force millions to migrate in the first place. The G8 leaders need to know that we will not stand by while they demonise and whip up racism against refugees. Their scapegoating policies are a crude attempt to divert attention away from their disastrous economic and military adventures which force people to live in abject poverty and then brand refugees as illegal, imprison them and violently deport them to imprisonment, torture and death.

We will not ignore our fellow human beings being locked up in Dungavel. On 5th July thousands of people from across Europe and beyond will show solidarity with those behind the wire by joining an mass protest at Dungavel to demand equal rights and free movement for all, and for an end to detention and deportation.

Kelvingrove. When are we getting our Bandstand back

What more do you want people to do [Glasgow City Council] All the work has been done, all the interest is there, all the support groups are there, Feasibilities, Business Plans. The public want it to happen. "Historic Scotland is just waiting for a letter from L.S. Parks before we move to Indicative Offer" Pay up for Glasgow! It wouldn't do people any harm, to enquire at the council when this project will happen.

_______THE FRIENDS OF KELVINGROVE PARK_______
Scottish Charity No. SC 033365 www.kelvingrovepark.com
BANDSTAND & AMPHITHEATRE (B&A) PROJECT - KEY POINTS JUNE 2005
• B-Listed 2000
• Feasibility Study completed 2003
• Business Plan (just finished) provides an excellent opportunity for G.C.C. to back the project
• Friends is very concerned to ensure that all of Kelvingrove Park remains as public space
• Now looking for funding to restore the B&A : public support essential (none of the grant awarding bodies will look at a project unless there is evidence of public support]
• So far 5 main potential flinders
Heritage Lottery
Historic Scotland
Arts Council
G.C.C.
Scottish Enterprise Glasgow
• To go to Council Parks & Facilities cttee in August
• 54 other bandstands throughout the U.K. have already been restored by H.L.F. They are all council owned and maintained, and are seen as important areas of civic pride and tourist infrastructure.
• Glasgow has a unique B&A, designed and built by its own Parks Dept.,
• even at feasibility stage there was a convincing list of potential users, which has now been extended and consolidated
• Historic Scotland is just waiting for a letter from L.S. Parks before we move to Indicative Offer

G8 Direct Action One day between 20th and 22nd June

On the local effect of the globalising neo liberal agenda for housing The organisers, Save Our Homes, say they would like a million people but if YOU bring a friend that will be great " 'Don’t care how you get there".
Glasgow are to organise a piece of direct action to highlight the housing sell off’s results to their city; secrecy, neglect, mass demolitions, illegal evictions, more homelessness. In particular they want to draw attention to proposed Edinburgh Privatisation. There are campaigners from around Scotland attending. Your area could be next to feel the force of the Dark Side on your Council housing. This means we must have people from Edinburgh as well as Glasgow attend. For more details on this ONE DAY Glasgow ACTION BETWEEN 20TH AND 22ND June 2005 to give some indication of the numbers who care about housing need and if you can TAKE PART please reply to this email TODAY to
