Will Tesco Get The Massage? Partick Did.
Residents of Partick have set the world record for the largest ever mass massage.
At 3pm on Sunday 29th April Partick residents told Tesco to ‘get the massage’ and leave the area the way it is - a place determined by it’s people. The record was set by a total of 87 participants who all enjoyed one moment of shared stress relief.The crowd gathered on a local green space(1) behind Morrison’s on Beith Street, which is in danger of being built upon as part of the Tesco development. The group were guided through the massage by trained masseur, Brendan McGuire. In one giant circle, Partick residents eased each other into relaxation whilst enjoying the much-appreciated Glasgow sunshine.
Following the record-breaking massage, participants hung ‘wish cards’ on trees along the perimeter of the site. “People have amazing ideas about how this space could be used,” said Laura Bradshaw, a local resident and organiser of the event. “A leisure or community centre, allotments, children’s play-park and city farm were just a few of the fantastic visions offered by the residents of Partick. It just goes to show that when people take the time to listen to the local community, the results are fresh and exciting.”
The people of Partick left the site in a haze of calm and tranquility, but the message was loud and clear: That the future of Partick is in the hands of it’s people, not Tesco.
The event was organised by ‘All Tomorrow’s Particks’. A collective of people who live and work in the area, who have come together to create visions of what Partick could be for the future. The group have promised that this will be the first in a series of events focusing on the future of Partick, in particular the proposed Tesco site. Whatever the Beith Street site is used for in the future, it should be up to the people of Partick to make the decision.

On Sunday 29 April 2007 at 3pm All Tomorrow’s Particks will be attempting to set the record for the world’s largest mass massage, under the guidance of a qualified and experienced masseur.The group are seeking: local stress-heads, adrenalin-junkies, tired parents, exhausted shoppers, dog walkers, low-paid part-timers, chief executives, the poorly postured and the hung over to have their troubles rubbed away in one big moment of stress relief.
This is the first in a series of events in the run up to the outcome of Tesco’s planning application for a 24 hour mega-store, 541 parking spaces and 925 student flats covering 7435 square meters on the Beith Street site.
It is clear from the public meetings that many people in Partick don’t want a Tesco at the bottom of Byres Road. The planned store is too big and not in keeping with its surroundings. It will result in increased congestion, have a negative environmental impact and will force the closure of some local businesses.
This event is an opportunity for the residents of Partick and the surrounding areas to come together to voice their opposition to Tesco in an alternative, creative fashion – to stand up and be massaged!
All Tomorrow’s Particks is a collective of people who live and work in the Partick area. They have come together to create visions of what Partick could be for the future - a place determined by the people who live there.

asylum seekers to fight for greater rights for asylum seekers and
sans papiers.
The UNITY Centre at 30 Ibrox Street is open five days a week near to
the Home Office Immigration centre. Here families who are scared of
being detained when reporting at the Immigration Centre can 'sign
in' before reporting so we can quickly alert their lawyers, friends and relatives if they are detained.
We offer friendly, practical solidarity and mutual aid to all asylum

Chernobyl Day at Faslane - Thursday 26th April
Thursday 26th April is the 21st anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster when a nuclear reactor in the Ukraine exploded and sent a radioactive cloud across Europe. As many as 60,000 people could die prematurely as a result of fall-out from the accident.
To mark the day, environmentalists will be gathering outside the Faslane submarine base from about 8am to rally, hold a die-in and to symbollically blockade the base where Trident nuclear weapons are based on board four nuclear-powered submarines.
Food will be provided by the Jeely Peace kitchen organised by Stirling CND.

Faslane 365 is a civil resistance project focussed in Scotland to
apply critical public pressure for the disarmament of Britain's

With only one week remaining in the election campaign for the Scottish Parliament and local government, charities and campaigners across Scotland are dismayed at the lack of attention the issue of poverty has received so far. In an effort to shine a spotlight on the Scotland's poverty crisis a number of organisations have come together to make THURSDAY 26 APRIL 'POVERTY ACTION DAY', and are encouraging voters to ask their candidates how they plan to fight poverty.
At the center of POVERTY ACTION DAY will be a number of 'poverty hustings' meetings where politicians will outline their strategies for tackling poverty. This is an opportunity for you to question the politicians on an issue that has received scant attention so far. The meetings are free and open to all. They will take place in:

UNITY is the new, rapidly growing, union of asylum seekers formed by
asylum seekers to fight for greater rights for asylum seekers and
sans papiers.
The UNITY Centre at 30 Ibrox Street is open five days a week near to
the Home Office Immigration centre. Here families who are scared of
being detained when reporting at the Immigration Centre can 'sign
in' before reporting so we can quickly alert their lawyers, friends and relatives if they are detained.
We offer friendly, practical solidarity and mutual aid to all asylum
seekers, refugees and sans papiers. Phone our 24 hour action line on

Chernobyl Day at Faslane - Thursday 26th April
Thursday 26th April is the 21st anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster when a nuclear reactor in the Ukraine exploded and sent a radioactive cloud across Europe. As many as 60,000 people could die prematurely as a result of fall-out from the accident.
To mark the day, environmentalists will be gathering outside the Faslane submarine base from about 8am to rally, hold a die-in and to symbollically blockade the base where Trident nuclear weapons are based on board four nuclear-powered submarines.
Food will be provided by the Jeely Peace kitchen organised by Stirling CND.

Faslane 365 is a civil resistance project focussed in Scotland to
apply critical public pressure for the disarmament of Britain's
nuclear weapons by a continuous peaceful blockade of the Trident
base at Faslane.

Spring Gardening Weekend at Talamh - Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd April

As well as general gardening in Talamh’s organic veggie plots and terraces, we will be putting a new cover on the polytunnel, and extending the frame for which extra hands are very welcome!
Stay for the whole day and take part in what’s going on, or just pop in to see what’s happening and have a look around. Soup for lunch will be available and hot drinks during the day.

News Update from S.T.O.P.(Stop Tesco Owning Partick)
The STOP group has been formed to organise a protest against Tesco's plans to build a huge retail and residential development along the bank of the River Kelvin, near Beith Street in Partick, Glasgow, including a 24-hour Tesco superstore, 580 car parking
spaces and a one-way system around Partick Cross.

to try to stop this proposal.

Roads and Railways - a filmnight for the Dear Green Place
Rats, Roads and Railways - a filmnight for the Dear Green Place
7pm, Wednesday 11th April, CCA cinema (CCA 4) Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow admission free (but ticketed)Four short films presenting different approaches to how ordinary individuals have responded to environmental and health issues in their local areas.
"Tesco demolishes Partick Central Railway Station because it can" (Samer Bagaeen, 2007) - on 28th Janury 2007 Tesco demolished the historic Partick Central Railway Station to make way for a new supermarket, despite protests from Historic Scotland and the local community, this film is one Glasgow resident's response to that event.
"Food For Life" (Maeve Gavin and Abi Mordin, 2006) - volunteers and staff at North Glasgow Community Food Initiative made this film to celebrate their work and contributions and to be able to show other people what the organisation does.
"From Rats to Roses" (Tamra Raven, 2002) - award-winning documentary about community gardens in New York and the residents' fight against Mayor Rudy Giuliani's plans to sell the land onto private developers.
"To Pollok With Love" (Ceri, Geoffrey and Joe, 1995) - an anti-road road movie linking road protests across the UK and culminating in the symbolic death of the car at the Pollok Free State, the famous road protest camp outside Glasgow that was the focus of the campaign by the local community and sympathetic activists against a motorway that cut through Pollok Park, once the largest city centre green space in Europe.
Total running time: 1 hr 30 mins.
The films will be introduced by Martha Wardrop and Simon Yuill. There will be time for discussion and questions regarding the current Tesco campaign following the films.
Tickets will be available on the night of the screening, but if you wish to get one in advance please contact the CCA box office a week or so before the screening. All tickets are free.

There is talk of an "amnesty" to allow families refused asylum to stay in the UK, but the head of the new Borders and Immigration Agency in Scotland has just announced that he intends to double the amount of dawn raids in Glasgow. This is an open discussion on the issues around seeking asylum, the impact of dawn raids and deportations, and what we can do to resist these attacks on our communities.

Second Vanunu Freedom Ride - Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th April
A group of us is organising the 2nd Vanunu Freedom Ride, a
bicycle ride from Faslane to London via Glasgow and
Edinburgh in April 2007. We are aiming to highlight the persecution of
Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli anti-nuclear whistle blower who was imprisoned for 18 years, and
spent 12 of these in solitary confinement. Although released from prison,
he is subject to many restrictions on his human rights, and as well as
calling for his full freedom, we oppose the existence of nuclear weapons (in
the Middle East as well as the UK and worldwide).
