Glasgow Autonomous Updates 31 Aug,

Welcome to this week's belated Glasgow Autonomy Update!

Our new social centre is almost ready to open - we are sorting more furniture and rewiring our lights as this email goes out! What we really need now is interesting things to display in the centre. If you have any photos of the St George's Cross/Woodside area, especially old photos, we'd love a copy to show on our walls. And if your campaign or action group would like to leave flyers/newsletters/A5 posters in the centre, drop by any time. We now have a landline number: 0141 332 2902

If you want to make the most of late summer, maybe you could do some outdoor activism near Glasgow. You might take action against nuclear WMD at the Faslane or Coulport camps, and/or plan a better world by helping out at the Talamh Life Centre. Either way, this week's update will let you know how to get involved.

Have a good week! CONTENTS:

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update

This week we are delighted to say that Glasgow's last G8 prisoner has been released from Barlinnie. To celebrate, and raise more money for the G8 legal fund, why not go along to the After 8 party this Saturday? (More info in the "Post G8" section).

Work continues on the new GAP social centre - now named the Georges Cross Chalkboard. The name was chosen because we want the centre to be a resource where everyone who visits can have a say. Although not open to the public yet, the centre now has a temporary phone number- 07814 303 157 - our landline will be connected by the end of the month. And of course new people are still welcome at our Monday meetings.

Have a good week!

P.S. We're currently looking for house plants for the Chalkboard - if you have any easily cared for plants which do well in low light, we could give them a good home!

At a recent public meeting on July 28th the Local Housing Manager, Bob McGuire stated that his staff were trained to deal with tenants properly and respectfully.
Also present at that public meeting was Paul Martin MSP who is a member of the GHA Ltd’s Board of Management . Paul states on this website referring to a meeting of 26th June; “The event, which took place at St Kevin's school, was organised by Save Our Homes campaigners to let the Sighthill community express opinions over the possible demolition of many homes in the area.
Over 2000 flats are currently under review for demolition as part of the GHA’s housing stock transfer, and many residents are concerned that a decision has already been taken over their future.
However, the GHA have stressed that no decision on the future of the flats will be taken until the results of a social survey are known.” *

This is Censorship

Well, the results are now know* more than 72% of Fountainwell tenants oppose demolition and 80% of Pinkston tenants are likewise opposed. However the revealed decision of GHA Ltd without who did NOT CONSULT was 1,100 flats in Fountainwell for demolition in and 1,000 Pinkston flats for modest refurbishment. The the people were and are against demolition but the GHA decided in favour and just as was the case with the Red Road, the tenants of Sighthill only found out via the mass media who were told initially to ‘sit on it’. Don’t tell the tenants till the official announcement was the message and then GHA Ltd. sends the information out to a few of the tenants by second class post thus guaranteeing that they get it after the media has announced the GHA Ltd decision to the world – so what was the point of the survey exercise? No part of Sighthill is safe. You cannot trust the GHA Ltd.

Target for Community Destruction

Sighthill Save Our Homes is opposed to the demolition of the Fountainwell area of Sighthill which is actively being targeted by the GHA Ltd for Community Destruction with tenants being bullied, by Housing Officers to accept re-housing outside the Sighthill area.

But You’ll Never walk alone
Tenants from across the city will be lobbying the Glasgow Housing Association Limited in support of Sighthill and to protest against the threat of demolishing up to 30,000 homes.

Lack of Investment by Anti-Social Landlord
Tenants are angry at their treatment at the hands of GHA Ltd. who talk about regeneration while acting in breach of the tenant landlord agreement with their policy of wilful neglect.

They are angry that the Scottish Executive are backing the activities of this exclusive, secretive, authoritarian landlord who are sitting on over £140million and are proposing to cut services and demolish huge numbers of homes without consultation. In fact GHA Ltd are secretive and refuse to consult with the tenants who would be affected by their decision making processes which are similar to the democratic style of Robert Mugabe or Ariel Sharon on housing policy.

 DANGER GHA Ltd Action Risks Glasgow Crime Wave + Fire Raising
Tenants are angry at the GHA Ltd’s intention to CUT the 24 HOUR Fixed Site Concierge Service. This will unquestionably lead to an escalation in real crime and put tenants into a state of
fear and alarm. The risk of fire will also be increased putting lives in danger. They say that they are communicating with tenants but could not be bothered sending an official along to a well publicised meeting in Sighthill. It is widely believed that the downgrading of the ‘Rolls-Royce 24
Hour fixed Site Concierge Service to a glorified mobile patrol service with staff cuts of two thirds from 144 to 50 for Glasgow starting with Sighthill, is a deliberate strategy to drive tenants out through fear to facilitate demolitions. This constitutes cruel and inhumane treatment.

They are angry at the ZERO level of consultation and the misinformation from GHA Ltd. whose idea of consultation is to say that they have spoken to the Tenants’ Committee of the Local housing Organisation ( LHO), a body which is the local branch of the GHA Ltd and which does not communicate with the Community in a meaningful way. It only issues glossy PR newsletters which are about spin, not dialogue.

The wilful neglect of communities which have not received a penny of investment since 2002. This is a clear breach of the Tenant - Landlord Agreement and at odds with the Scotland Housing Act 2001. So called regeneration is nothing more than a euphemism for the destruction of communities. The proposed wilful destruction of Sighthill will, if GHA Ltd have their way, be replicated in Cartyne, Govan, Gorbals, Red Road and elsewhere with 30,000 homes under review for demolition.

Need - not Real Estate Speculation
GHA Ltd say they don’t want to spend money on homes which may be demolished in the future; in the mean time families have to live in damp houses with fungus on the walls!
What is needed are the Multi-storey Flats in Fountainwell and other parts of Glasgow to get a substantial part of the £140 million surplus as investment to improve the living .
Tenants and Concierges say that the existing high quality fixed Site Concierge Service should be enhanced and promoted as a good example throughout the UK.

Social Apartheid
Save Our Homes despite its unhappiness with the present landlord opposes Secondary Stock Transfer, realising that this will as surely as night follows day lead to ghettoisation and increase poverty resulting from further cherry picking by housing associations seeking the most desirable properties and leaving the residual housing behind.

Background
Starting in Ireland, the group will take part in a Feile Festival as a central part of a Palestinian theme. From Derry the group will travel to Scotland, where they will perform at the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival and other venues. Performance in Wales, Exeter and London aim to bring Palestinian culture to people who might have forgotten that Palestine has a culture. Numerous cultural exchange forums and joint social outings will allow the children to meet with local youth and learn from one another.

Voices of the camp

Although the Israel/Palestine issue is fairly high-profile in the UK and Ireland, voices of camp residents remain marginalised. The "A'edoon" ~ We will Return ~ performance will offer a rare insight into and emotional connection with Palestinian lives, allowing the children to represent themselves not merely as victims but as a people continuing their struggle to endure.
Palestinian children’ own story

None of the children have ever left Palestine, and for many it will be their first time out of Nablus/Balata. Each child has his or her own story of despair, poverty and struggle; most have family members imprisoned or murdered.
A Voice through Performance The alleyways of Balata provide little respite and no means of dealing with trauma.
Performance has given these children a voice, a means to express their frustration, needs and resistance. Taking these kids on tour will further challenge their isolation and loneliness, giving them some hope in humanity and rebuilding their self-confidence. Being allowed to perform their art to foreign audiences and being appreciated for their skills will be one of the most amazing experiences these children have ever had.

About the Show

Originally based on Marcel Khalife’s ‘Ahmed Al-Arabi’, the "A'edoon" production chronicles the expulsion of Palestinians from their village and their ensuing oppression as refugees. Based out of the Yafa Cultural Centre, this innovative performance takes the audience through a rollercoaster of the extremes of human emotion - from pain and sadness, resentment and outrage, to laughter and finally inspiration and hope.
in solidarity,
balatacamp.net collective www.balatacamp.net

PS. Please circulate widely to all your friends and colleagues - we want to make sure the shows are sold out and reach as wide an audience as possible!!

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

This Saturday marks the 60th anniversary of the US nuclear bomb attacks on Hiroshima. 60 years on, the UK still has its own nuclear weapons of mass destruction just 30 miles north of Glasgow, at Faslane. Events to commemorate Hiroshima are taking place around Scotland, including one in George Square.

If attending the vigil makes you feel like you want to take more direct action against the nuclear state, why not visit Faslane Peace Camp? They've been witnessing the existence of Faslane Nuclear Base for the last 23 years, and are looking for visitors to blockade, cut in, look after the gardens and so on. Or you could take part in Trident Plougshares' Coulport Disarmament Camp at the end of this month. More info can be found in our "Anti-War" section.

*GAP update: We have drafted a contract and are meeting this week with the landlord and estate agent (yawn). Meanwhile we are busy planning how to welcome people into our new social centre and how to run it democratically. New members are always welcome at our meetings - see the special announcement below. *

Have a good week!

Remember Hiroshima - Saturday 6th August

In August 1945 the US dropped nuclear bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. The cities were obliterated, over 250,000 people were killed and generations poisoned by radiation.

Britain has just under 200 nuclear warheads. Each warhead has eight times the power of the bomb that devastated Hiroshima.

As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we are calling on the government to make a commitment that the UK will neither use, threaten to use nor develop nuclear weapons, and will take immediate steps for their abolition.

12 noon; vigil, George Square, Glasgow

We see this fulfilled thru a society built upon principles of co-operation, solidarity, mutual-aid, direct democracy and freedom of association.

We are currently in the process of creating a social centre.

A place to have a cup of tea in a friendly, non commercial space, read a book or magazine and find out about stuff that's going on in the city, the country and the rest of the world.

A meeting place for wayward souls.

A resource centre for groups fighting for autonomy, freedom, solidarity, equality, sustainability, mutual aid and peace against poverty, war and oppression.

If you would like to contribute to the project financially please note the following details. We are looking for one-off donations but especially standing orders.
