Rita Giacaman is the leading Palestinian academic in primary care and public health, having worked at the University of Birzeit for 26 years and gained an international reputation for her leadership of the Institute of Community and Public Health*. Active in the Palestinian social action movement since the early
1980s, she has focused on issues concerning health, women, disability and
pyscho-social mental health, building primary health care from the ground up,
while carrying out research to inform policy and evaluate actions.

In this presentation, which will include ample time for questions and discussion, she will describe her work at the ICPH, with a case-study on mental health promotion in the West Bank and Gaza, set against the prevailing Israeli military occupation.
