City Strolls - events - meetings

Thursday, November 03, 2005

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomous update

This weekend sees the release of Camcorder Guerillas' new film about the Dungavel detention centre and the abuse of refugees' human rights. The first screening is free - see Refugees section for more details. Also happening is an awareness raising weekend about Depleted Uranium weapons - radioactive, deadly and tested in rural Scotland. Check out the Anti-War section for details for how to get involved. The George's X Chalkboard social centre is now open Friday-Tuesday, 2pm-7pm. We would love to open seven days for longer hours, so if you can give time to do a shift, come to one of our organising meetings or drop in and get involved. Alternatively, you can support us by setting up a standing order donation (see bottom of this email). We have funds to keep the centre open for a while, but ultimately we'll depend on support and fundraising.

Have a good week!

MEETINGS

---

GAP meeting - Monday 7th November

We hold weekly meetings in our social centre, the Georges Cross Chalkboard, at 8pm on Mondays. Everything to do with how the centre is run is decided at the Monday meeting.

Georges Cross Chalkboard, 34 Clarendon Place, just off Maryhill Road.

Nearest underground: St George's Cross
Buses: 20, 30, 40, 61, 66 from town centre to St George's Cross end of Maryhill Road

All who agree with our vision statement are welcome at our meetings:
"We strive for a sustainable society where all people are free to live
their lives as they see fit without fear of oppression, persecution or
marginalization insofar as this does not prevent others from doing the
same. We see this fulfilled thru a society built upon principles of
co-operation, solidarity, mutual-aid, direct democracy and freedom of
association."

REFUGEES

---

VISIT DUNGAVEL (Monster of the Glen) - Saturday 5th November

"Visit Dungavel (Monster of the Glen), is a provoacative new film from the Camcorder Guerillas. A mix of animation, drama, testimony, music, puppets and Guerilla satire - this film lifts the lid on the abuse of refugees' human rights in detention.

Imagine escaping persecution in your own country, running for safety, then just when you think you can breathe freely, you and your children are locked up without trial.

The UK locks up over 25,000 asylum-seekers every year. Men, women and children. Asylum is a right, not a crime.

When: 2:00 pm
Where: GFT (Glasgow Film Theatre), Rose St, Glasgow
FREE - All welcome

Help set up a peer-to-peer internet radio broadcast - ongoing

A small group of Glasgow based individuals are attempting to start a peer to peer internet radio broadcast and are looking for others interested in such a project with or without expertise. It would be good if some of those interested came with some expertise as we have very little.

ANTI-WAR

---

Weekend of action against depleted uranium - Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th November

Buchanan St, starting 12 noon
(if raining we will likely relocate around St Enoch's Sq which is at the bottom of Buchanan St next to the tube station and has some shelter).

Wherever DU has been used there has been huge increases in cancers, birth defects and numerous other killer illnesses. It is also widely believed that DU is a major factor in Gulf War Syndrome, the mystery condition that has struck down thousands of veterans of the 1st Gulf War.

Scotland also boasts the only European open-air testing site for DU munitions, in Dundrennan, South-West Scotland. Over 30 tonnes of radioactive waste have been fired into the Solway Firth since the 1980s, and Dundrennan is littered with burnt-out tanks and other objects used as target practice for Challenger tanks.

All welcome

Mass leafletting. Open-mike to speak out against war and oppression. Bring your own placards, leaflets, and ideas.
