Trade Union Meeting Thursday 11 th May 7.30 pm STUC Woodlands Road
Introduction by Pete Murray, NUJ National Executive (personal capacity)
The Campaign is setting up a Trade Union Committee to further the links with TU bodies, both in the city and beyond. Over the past five years, support from trade unions in the form of speakers, banners and finance has been crucial to the building of the campaign. The demonstration last July at Dungavel during the G8 (the biggest demonstration ever in Britain outside a Detention Centre) was mainly paid for by donations from Trade Unions.
The increase in dawn raids, detention and deportation of refugees, who have lived in Glasgow for years waiting for cases to be decided, has caused widespread anger not only within the communities where refugees live but also across the city and across Scotland. There is also increasing concern at the number of refugees being made destitute. All of this has led to large protests and demonstrations resulting in a considerable number of deportations being stopped with the families brought back to the city while legal efforts continue on their behalf. Trade unionists have been very active in these protests in a variety of ways.
This meeting is open to all trade unionists and is to set up a Campaign activists subcommittee of trade unionists who will extend and develop the Campaign's links with the Trade Union movement. Pete Murray of the NUJ National Executive will lead off with an explanation of recent work the NUJ has done with refugees.
