Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

Dear Colleague,
Launch of Scotland's for Peace - Wed 16th March, 7pm, Oran Mor, Byres Road
I write to invite you to attend the launch of an exciting new development for the peace movement in Scotland. With over 70 active military bases and as the home of Britain's Trident nuclear submarine fleet, Scotland plays a key role as a monitoring station, testing ground, supply base and launch-pad for overseas wars. But now there is growing opposition to this situation.

Two years ago the people of Scotland mounted the biggest demonstration in living memory against the war in Iraq. There is widespread opposition to Scotland's nuclear bases and the use of Scotland's land and waters for war preparations.
'Scotland's for Peace' is a new and broadly based campaign intended to project Scotland as a force for peace and justice in the world rather than a launch-pad for war. We aim to win support for the campaign among the majority of Scots including councillors, MPs and MSPs. At the core of the campaign is a declaration for individuals and organisations to sign.
The launch will be compered by Elaine C Smith and feature a 30 minute musical contribution by Dick Gaughan. It will include contributions by AL Kennedy, trade union leaders such as Bill Speirs and Mike Kirby, and leading figures from the Church of Scotland, the lona Community and the Muslim community. It will also include recently made video footage. Entry will free of charge but we will be asking for a collection during the event to help finance future campaigning.
I do hope you can mange along to this important event. Yours in Peace
Alan Mackinnon Chair
