Autonomous Updates

Hello folks and welcome to this week's Glasgow Autonomy Update.

Our featured news story this week is that of a participatory project called Shop 111. Shop 111 opened its doors to the public on Saturday. Situated in Saltmarket, the project is to rent a shop for one month, and use it how the locals see fit. Prior to opening Will Foster, who conceived of it, went round the local community fairly extensively to try and gauge opinion about what the working class residents of the Saltmarket felt they needed most, and surprise, surprise they said they needed a place to buy fruit and vegetables, and a place to congregate and wash their clothes, not yet another trendy furniture shop.

Shop 111 is open Tuesday to Friday (12:00 – 4:30) and Saturday & Sunday
(11:00 – 17:00). Pop along and take a look or lend a hand.

We strive for a sustainable society where all people are free to live their lives as they see fit without fear of oppression, persecution or marginalization insofar as this does not prevent others from doing the same. We see this fulfilled thru a society built upon principles of co-operation, solidarity, mutual-aid, direct democracy and freedom of association.

We are currently in the process of creating a social centre.

A place to have a cup of tea in a friendly, non commercial space, read a book or magazine and find out about stuff that's going on in the city, the country and the rest of the world.

A meeting place for wayward souls.

A resource centre for groups fighting for autonomy, freedom, solidarity, equality, sustainability, mutual aid and peace against poverty, war and oppression.

If you would like to contribute to the project financially please note the following details. We are looking for one-off donations but especially standing orders.

20 April: Israeli terrorism and Palestinian resistance

Glasgow: Wednesday 20th April 7.30pm, Renfield Saint Stephens Church, 260 Bath Street (next to Elmbank Street)
Professor Ted Honderich is emeritus professor of Philosophy and holds the Grote chair in the Philosophy of Mind and Logic at University College London. In his book After the Terror, he claims ‘a moral right on behalf of the Palestinians to their terrorism’, and ‘that it is permissible if not obligatory for them to engage in it’, given the sustained brutality and butchery directed against them.

He will also not shy away from the question of suicide bombings, so it is expected to be a profound and thought provoking talk.

CEDAR STREET TENANTS PUBLIC MEETING - FIX THE LIFT NOW!

We demand:
The lift is fixed now, immediately. We don't want apologies from GHA Ltd we want urgent action; if it were their homes we were talking about it would be fixed by now.
We are kept informed if its going to take any longer to be fixed. An official communication should be posted in the entrance foyer.GLASGOW HOUSING ASSOCIATION LTD
CREATING BITTER HOMES
CREATING ANGRY COMMUNITIES

The lift that serves half the tenants at 65 Cedar St has been out of order for over 2 months. During that time the affected residents have had to use the narrow and slippery fire escape for 3 flights of stairs to access their own homes. The elderly, the disabled and those with babies have been virtually housebound.
This is dangerous and a Health and Safety issue.
After more than 2 months of silence from GHA Ltd, now we get an insulting letter "thanking us for our patience" and being careful not to promise anything. We are told that they "anticipate" it will be fixed before the middle of May - over a month away.
We are fed up with GHA Ltd treating us with contempt. They use our rent money to send around glossy brochures telling us all how great they are, but don't provide us with the basic services we should be able to expect.
In December they tore out everyone's existing heating systems and replaced them with smaller units, whether the residents wanted them changed or not. This damaged everybody's interior decoration, and there were rumours of minimal compensation, but even that has not been forthcoming.
GHA Ltd are quick enough to send letters round if we are even a day late paying our rent, but they do not keep up their end of the bargain as our landlord. Why should we believe them now?

Workers Memorial Day

Workers Memorial Day: "Decades of struggle by workers and their unions have resulted in significant improvements in working conditions. But the toll of workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths remains enormous. Each year more than 60,000 workers die from job injuries and illnesses and another 6 million are injured. The unions of the AFL-CIO remember these workers on April 28, Workers Memorial Day."

22 April CANDLES 4 KIDS

To highlight the plight of families torn apart by the slow process of the
courts, and those children who find themselves without members of their
family after separation. This is a family-based event, a peaceful candlelit
vigil, an attempt to show the political parties and those involved in
children's issues that the support is out there and comes from every corner
CANDLES 4 KIDS
FRIDAY 22ND APRIL Peaceful Demonstration World Wide
Your Local Family Court
7pm, candles lit at 7.30pm

To highlight the plight of families torn apart by the slow process of the
courts, and those children who find themselves without members of their
family after separation. This is a family-based event, a peaceful candlelit
vigil, an attempt to show the political parties and those involved in
children's issues that the support is out there and comes from every corner
- all ages, sexes and backgrounds. It's NOT just excluded dads who believe
children need 2 parents and need to feel the support of their biological
family - it's dads, mums, step-parents,
grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, friends, godparents, neighbours...
everybody.

People Power is the way forward - if we want change, we need to fight for
it. Hundreds of thousands of children are adversely affected by parental
separation and the problems that follow. Don't watch the news on the
television - create it! Bring your family, friends, colleagues... and a
candle. It is completely free and nothing is asked of you but your
support. candles4kids – just a group of individuals who want to make a
better life for all our children.

There will be supporters congregated at each main Family Court of every
major town and city. If you would like to show your support at your local
family court, don't wait to be asked... Do it!

Please show your support and encourage everyone you know to do the same. We
aim to have a strong presence from MP's and the media. Publicity is often
limited to national newspapers and news and as well as that coverage, we
want to achieve high levels of awareness at local and regional level. This
is to try and hammer home the idea that this
problem exists in your street, in your community, not only at the top of a
crane, or outside Buckingham Palace. It's widespread and it affects
everybody who has children, or is involved with children.

PLEASE LET US KNOW ABOUT EVENTS HAPPENING IN AND AROUND GLASGOW SO THAT WE CAN INCLUDE THEM NEXT WEEK.

Preferred format is a short summary, with practical details of when and where, and a link to a web page for more detail. If you do not have a web site of your own, the excellent http://scotland.indymedia.org/ allows anyone to easily create a page letting others know what you have been, or are up to.

Send that to glasgowautonomyupdates@lists.riseup.net before Sunday for inclusion in the following week.
